MLF TAKES ON OWNER OF BUILDING FOR DEATH OF 24 YEAR OLD KILLED IN BROOKLYN FIRE TRAGEDY

1434 FLATBUSH PIC 2New York, New York.  Monier Law Firm issued a press release seeking witnesses and information concerning the fire at 1434 Flatbush Avenue, in Brooklyn on November  19, 2014, leading to the death of a 24 year old young man, killed as a result of negligent conditions existing at the premises.

It was widely reported in the media that in addition to his death, 15 others were injured in the two-alarm blaze.  It was also reported by the media that the building had a church located on the first floor and apartments on the second and third floors.  The owner of the building admitted that he knew that renters on the second and third floors routinely let multiple people move into the rooms in the upstairs apartments, but did nothing to either stop the practice or make the building safe in the event of a fire.  Furthermore, the building had faulty electric and inadequate heat.  The cause of the fire has been attributed to the tenants trying to cope with the lack of electricity and heat.  The cause of the fire is suspected of starting on the second floor where a refrigerator and an electric heater were plugged into an extension cord.

The young man who died lived on the third floor.  The news reported that he was badly burned and was pronounced dead at the hospital about two hours after the fire started.

The family’s lawyer, Phil Monier said, “whenever an owner of a building is aware of dangerous conditions and does nothing to fix or abate those dangerous conditions and, as a result, people are seriously injured, that owner must be held accountable.  This family deserves justice for the life that was taken, and the other people injured in this tragedy deserve justice as well.  Its heartbreaking.”
